Food Sovereignty in a center for the living with HIV/AIDS

The center on a daily basis cares for the sick and according to their state some are admitted for whatever time necessary.
Objectives
Guarantee food sovereignty in a sustainable way for the 388 people who benefit from the center “Karuna Aids Care Center”.
Location
The center is located in Manmad, the third largest city of the Nasik district in the state of Maharshtra.
RESULTs
- There has been an increase in the agricultural production
- There has been a reduction in the operating cost of the center “Karuna Aids Care Center”.
- They have strengthened the human capacities of minors in “Karuna Aids Care Center”.
BENEFICIARIES
- Direct: 388 people. The most characteristic trait of these direct beneficiaries is that they are infected with the virus of HIV. They are men and women, minors, and children that are excluded from society and do not have a place to go because of the fear of the illness, out of fear of being discriminated against and abandoned by their families.
- Indirect: 4500 people
The Karuna Aids Care Center is an annex of the Karuna Hospital. Located in Manmad a rural town in the state of Maharashtra, this therapeutic center was built to care for the sick with AIDS that would seek help at the hospital.
The center on a daily basis cares for the sick and, depending on their state, some are admitted for whatever time necessary. Here they are provided with medical assistance; physical and moral through a team of medics and qualified personnel. At the same time the center takes in minors who are infected and whose parents have died as a result of the virus. In the center, aside from the having the necessary care to help the children live with their virus they receive education in order to integrate themselves into state schools and as a result provide them with the hope of a future.
The project was developed by a community of the Daughters of Charity in India, born of the initiative of the beneficiaries of the center to contribute with their skills and abilities, to a solution that achieves the sustainability of the center and its future independence. For this the activities proposed focus on two lines of action:
- Achieving food sovereignty through ¨family¨ agricultural development to achieve a self-sustaining center.
- Promote education and vocational training of the beneficiaries of the center to ensure their integration into society and provide a future option.
The cultivation of the land that the center has and it’s agriculture and livestock with the help of the Foundation would ensure sustainability rights of food, health and work for the 388 people who benefit from the center and would allow the minors who there find a way to social inclusion and would allow them to become the authors of their own lives.
